Slash and Shark Friendly Marinas work to end Shark Harvest

Today, we need your shark support more than ever. The Shark Friendly Marina Initiative has asked super rockstar and shark advocate Slash to help us spread the word about the increasing problem of shark harvest. We have created a brief but important PSA which will be distributed with the help of a SPARK, a widget that embeds this important message on social media streams. We hope you will be able to share this PSA through your social media contacts! Please see below how you can do this.

Recent data shows that more than 100,000,000 sharks are killed every year, a statistic that has increased since the last reliable data and requires action on every level. The Shark Friendly Marina Initiative is committed to working with public and private marinas and businesses to end the harvest at the docks. Recreational fishermen are on the whole quite aware of the decimation of shark stocks and responsibly practice catch and release fishing. However even just a few boats that target local populations of threatened shark species can have a devastating effect on the shark population.

Together we aim to increase the awareness of the threat to sharks and also to help raise the money needed to continue our outreach to media and marinas; and, to provide signs and educational materials to each of our 340+ existing members and future members free of charge.

The Shark-Friendly Marina Initiative

"Reducing Worldwide Shark Mortality, one marina at a time"

The Shark-Friendly Marina Initiative has a singular purpose, to reduce worldwide shark mortality.
We encourage shark conservation at sport fishing and resort marinas by prohibiting the landing of any shark at the participating marina.

What is a Shark-Friendly and a Shark-FrEE Marina?

SFMI-SHARK-FRIENDLY-sign-th
SFMI Sign

A Shark Friendly Marina or Business discourages killing or landing sharks. They do not serve shark products or promote activities that intentionally harm sharks

A Shark-Free Marina does not allow
sharks to be killed and landed at their facility.
This is a ZERO TAKE policy

Why have two classifications?

We'd like to register every marina as Shark-Free, however, some State laws or private companies have policies that do not allow for a complete ban on killing sharks. In these cases we offer the Shark-Friendly classification which discourages the intentional killing of sharks.

This allows for educational materials and participation in a conservation program by facilities which would otherwise not have access to our program.
